The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) recently released a new economic indicator, the Producer Price Index (PPI) that is being published monthly. The monthly bulletin of producer prices represents a new index number that tracks price movements at the level of the producer for the Mining & Quarrying and Manufacturing industries.  The data will be published with a two month lag and all indices are subject to two subsequent revisions after the original release.
 
The Producer Price Index (PPI) for May 2007 recorded a 0.4 per cent increase for Mining and Quarrying and a 2.4 per cent increase for Manufacturing. For April and March 2007 the index numbers for both industries increased; Mining & Quarrying by 0.3 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively and Manufacturing by 1.2 per cent in April and 1.3 per cent in March.

For the period May 2006 to May 2007, the index for Mining & Quarrying increased by 4.3 per cent while there was an upward movement of 11.2 per cent in the output prices for the   Manufacturing industry.

The Producer Price Index Bulletin for May 2007 provides detailed information on the movement of producer prices and is available at the Statistical Institute of Jamaica’s distribution centre located at 7 Cecelio Avenue, Kingston 10.
